To find a file on your computer :

Lesson 1 :  If you know the name of the file

  1. Click on "Start" on the taskbar, then "Search" a box will appear.
  2. In the section labeled "All or part of the file name" type the name (or part of the name) of the file.
  3. Make sure that the box labeled "Look in" says "C:" or "Local hard drives", if it does not click on the little down arrow next to that box and then choose the option "Local hard drives"
  4. Click on "Search", this might take a few seconds as Windows searches your hard drive.  In the window below, you will see files that match what you are looking for appear.  (You can maximize the window to see it better by clicking on the box next to the X in the upper right corner)
  5. You should see the file you are looking for in the list.  The "In folder" category tells where on the hard drive the file is located.  The "Modified" category shows the date the file was made.  You can check this to verify it is the file you are looking for by what date you downloaded it.
  6. Double clicking on the file in the list will open it. (this does not work for fonts)

Lesson 2 :  If you do not know the name of the file, or Lesson 1 was no help

  1. Run Windows Explorer by clicking on "Start" on the taskbar, then "All Programs", "Accessories", "Windows Explorer" a window will appear.
On the left side of the window is a section showing drives and folders.  On the right is a larger section showing folders and files.  When you click on something on the left, it will show you what is inside that Drive or folder on the right.
  2. Click on the plus "+" sign next to the "C:" drive if there is one.  That will expand and show you what folders are on that drive.  If there is a minus sign next to the "C:" then it is already expanded.
  3. If you are using America Online, then your downloaded files are automatically saved to a folder called "downloads".  This is stored in the America Online folder.
Click on the plus "+" sign next to the "Program Files" folder on the left.  You may have to use the scroll bar in that left window to find it.
  4. Click on the plus "+" sign next to "America Online 9.0" (or whatever America Online folder is there.  They are different for different versions)
  5. Click on the "downloads" folder.  This will highlight it and show you the files inside that folder on the right.
  6. Click on the "AOL downloads" folder.
  7. Look on the right side for your file.  Clicking on the "Modified" line near the top of that right window will sort the files by date.  This can make it easier to find the file if you know the date you downloaded it.
Double clicking on the file will open it. (this does not work for fonts)
